Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is progressing well in his recovery from major knee surgery and everything is trending toward a potential Week 1 start for the 2026 season, according to a report from CBS Sports.

CBS Sports NFL reporter Evan Washburn provided the latest update from the team’s training camp, stating,

“It is clear everything is trending in that direction.”

Washburn was reporting on Mahomes’ efforts to return for the season opener after the star signal-caller tore the ACL and LCL in his left knee during a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Dec. 14, 2025.

Mahomes underwent surgery the following day in Dallas to repair both ligaments. The injury occurred late in the fourth quarter of a 16-13 defeat that eliminated the Chiefs from playoff contention for the first time in more than a decade, ending their streak of 10 consecutive postseason appearances.

The three-time Super Bowl champion has spent the ensuing months in intensive rehabilitation, often working seven hours a day. Reports indicate he has advanced to participating in team drills, including 11-on-11 sessions, without significant setbacks as training camp continues.

Coach Andy Reid and the organization have expressed optimism about Mahomes’ timeline. Typical recovery from ACL reconstruction ranges from nine to 12 months, placing a September return near the optimistic end of the spectrum given the mid-December procedure.

Mahomes, now 30, enters this season as one of the most accomplished quarterbacks of his generation. Through 126 regular-season games, he has completed 3,093 of 4,673 passes for 35,939 yards, 267 touchdowns and 85 interceptions, posting a career passer rating of 100.8.

He has also contributed significantly with his legs, rushing for 2,665 yards and 19 touchdowns on 496 carries. In 2025 alone, before the injury limited him to 14 games, Mahomes threw for 3,587 yards and 22 touchdowns while setting career highs with 422 rushing yards and five rushing scores.

Those numbers underscore his dual-threat ability that has fueled three Super Bowl victories and two NFL MVP awards. Mahomes holds numerous franchise records for the Chiefs, including career passing yards, touchdowns and passer rating, and ranks among the all-time leaders in several NFL categories for his era.

The Chiefs went 6-8 in the games Mahomes started last season and finished outside the playoffs. His absence highlighted the challenge of replacing a player who has consistently elevated the offense through improvisation and precision throws under pressure.

A healthy Mahomes would immediately restore Kansas City’s status as a perennial contender in the AFC. The team opens the regular season against the Denver Broncos, and early indications suggest he could be under center if his current trajectory holds.

Washburn’s assessment aligns with other recent updates noting Mahomes’ full participation in practice and the absence of any reported complications. The quarterback has previously stated his goal of returning stronger than before, emphasizing a daily commitment to the recovery process.

While the Chiefs have depth at the position, the presence of their franchise cornerstone remains central to their championship aspirations. Mahomes’ combination of arm talent, mobility and leadership has produced consistent excellence since he became the full-time starter in 2018.

As training camp progresses, further evaluations will determine the exact workload Mahomes can handle, including any limitations from a protective knee brace. For now, the latest reports paint a positive picture of a player determined to reclaim his place at the helm for Week 1.
