Cleveland Browns’ injury update is a mixed bag in terms of good and bad news ahead of opener against Bengals

The Cleveland Browns suffered what looked like a worrisome injury during their final preseason game against the Los Angeles Rams. When Ethan Pocic went down holding his knee, it appeared the Browns might have taken a significant hit along the offensive line.

Fortunately, that wasn’t the case. Pocic was back on the field for the Browns on Wednesday as they began preparing for the Cincinnati Bengals in Sunday’s season opener. Overall, Cleveland is relatively healthy heading into Week 1, with only one player not practicing.

Mike Hall Jr.’s status is the one to watch for the Browns vs. Bengals in Week 1

Cleveland activated Hall from the PUP list ahead of roster cutdowns more than a week ago, signaling that he is close to returning. The former Ohio State Buckeye had offseason knee surgery after being injured in last year’s regular season finale. He has yet to practice, but that could change soon.

“I’m going to focus on today, but I think we’re in good shape today,” Kevin Stefanski said Wednesday regarding the team’s health. “I think Mike’s (Hall) the only one not practicing.”

Hall is expected to be a disruptive force on the interior defensive line as a pass rusher and showed solid run-stopping ability last season. The Browns have strong depth at defensive tackle and don’t need to rush him back, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if he sits out against the Bengals. Rookie Mason Graham, along with veterans Maliek Collins and Shelby Harris, will play key roles inside. Undrafted rookie Adin Huntington could also see snaps.

Hall being the only absence is encouraging news for Cleveland. Linebacker Mohamoud Diabate, who had missed a couple of weeks, and tight end Blake Whiteheart, who was dealing with a knee injury, were both back on the field ahead of the opener.
Whether or not Hall practices Thursday will provide a clearer picture of his Week 1 availability, but for now it looks unlikely he’ll play. The bigger news for the Browns may be that Pocic is ready to go, giving them a healthy offensive line to start the season—something that didn’t seem certain when he went down against the Rams.
