Commanders GM Martin Mayhew has 'spoken to every club that has a QB who might be available'

If those running the Washington Commanders believe they could be comfortable with having Taylor Heinicke enter training camp as their starting quarterback, they're not doing the best job of selling it in the closing weeks of winter. 

Following a report that Washington could include 2020 Defensive Rookie of the Year Chase Young in a trade for either Green Bay Packers starter Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Ron Rivera said his team currently has "a lot to offer" any top-tier signal-caller looking for a change of scenery. 

Commanders general manager Martin Mayhew made it clear Wednesday he's reached out to all could-be sellers ahead of the new league year that opens on March 16. 

"We feel we have canvassed the league effectively," Mayhew explained at the NFL Scouting Combine on Wednesday, according to John Keim of ESPN. "We've spoken to every club that has a quarterback who might be available."

For what it's worth, head coach Pete Carroll told reporters Wednesday the Seahawks "have no intention" of trading Wilson, and the Packers sound somewhat confident Rodgers will return to the organization for at least one more year. 

As Keim noted, Washington tried to trade for Matthew Stafford last winter, but the Detroit Lions instead sent Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams. 

"If you don't have a franchise quarterback, you have to have urgency about [finding one] every year," Mayhew added during his comments. "We were very urgent about it last year. I'm not sure that was a fair fight for Matthew last year, I'll leave it there. We did everything we could to find the right guy."

While Mayhew and Rivera admitted they could turn to free agency or the upcoming NFL Draft to find a potential QB1, it sounds as if doing so or trading for someone such as San Francisco 49ers veteran Jimmy Garoppolo would represent Washington settling for a less-than-desired option regarding the sport's most important position for a second straight offseason.
