The Washington Commanders have become the underdog darlings of the NFL postseason. Their last-second game-winning field goal sent them to a 23-20 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and onto the NFC Divisional round.
Washington is also an outlier being that they are the only wild card team to win last weekend with all the other competing division winners protected home field. Their reward? A matchup with the vaunted No. 1 seeded Detroit Lions Saturday evening.
Many may count them out in this matchup given the staggering challenge ahead. But there is a belief exuded around the team and their staff, specifically offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.
In fact, Kingsbury has translated that focus into his approach with teams currently pursuing him for their head coaching vacancies. According to Pro Football Talk, he has decided to wait until the end of the season to talk to any teams.
Kingsbury is certainly not the first to do this, but the former Arizona Cardinals head coach had opportunities to interview with both the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints at some point this week.
If the Commanders happen to upset the Lions on Saturday, this surprising strategy is expected to continue. That result may test some teams' patience as they look to fill a crucial spot on their staffs.
Kingsbury's continued payout from Arizona may add to some lack of urgency on his part. But that could also come from the position he holds right now.
He does not have the same authority as a head coach, yet Kingsbury has played a vital role in guiding along Jayden Daniels through his rookie season. Daniels and Kingsbury have provided a spark on the offensive side that Washington has missed for a long time.
That partnership could separate as soon as this offseason if a team waits on Kingsbury and he accepts a new job. But he has established a strong foundation with the Commanders and there is no need for him to lose focus or rush to another opportunity.
