Commanders LT Laremy Tunsil Suffers Triceps Tear

Earlier today, the Commanders made a pair of additions up front in the form of Daniel Brunskill and Nicholas Petit-Frere with testing on Tunsil still pending. Backup options could now be counted upon into the fall to help handle left tackle duties. ESPN’s Adam Schefter adds Washington is still gathering information to determine a firm timeline. Nevertheless, a lengthy absence appears to be in store; Tashan Reed of the Washington Post notes a recovery of multiple months is expected.

Tunsil was acquired via trade last offseason, and he made 14 appearances during his debut campaign in the nation’s capital. The five-time Pro Bowler signed a two-year extension in March. That pact made him the league’s first offensive tackle to reach $30MM in average annual value, marking a notable financial milestone and confirming his importance to the Commanders. Tunsil was in line to remain an anchor up front for Washington in 2026, a year in which a bounce back in general compared to 2025 is being sought out.

The Commanders will spend the remainder of training camp evaluating their potential O-line combinations to compensate for Tunsil’s absence. Brandon Coleman made 12 starts at left tackle as a rookie and also saw time on the blindside last season. Washington’s plan was for the former third-rounder to move inside to guard on a permanent basis, however. That approach may now need to change.

Alternatively, the Commanders could look to veteran Andrew Wylie and 2025 first-rounder Josh Conerly as a tackle tandem. Wylie has totaled 93 starts in his career, but he does not have experience operating at the left tackle spot. Conerly, meanwhile, was not on track to see significant time on the blindside while playing out his rookie contract thanks to Tunsil’s extension.

Regardless of how things play out along the O-line, Tunsil’s absence will be acutely felt. When a timeline is in place, it will become clearer if a return to the lineup for any 2026 involvement will be possible. For now, attention will turn to a lengthy recovery process and the Commanders’ ability to fill a major vacancy on offense.
