Commanders' summer breakout hit with another cruelly familiar setback

Things looked incredibly promising for Chris Rodriguez Jr. just a few short weeks ago. A bigger role with the Washington Commanders was expected in 2025 after the team traded Brian Robinson Jr. to the San Francisco 49ers for a sixth-round pick. That might arrive at some stage, but it's a waiting game until further notice.

The Commanders felt comfortable enough in their running back rotation to remove Robinson from the equation before final cuts. He was their starter last season, so it was a big call to make, but Washington's efforts on the ground in Week 1 against a stout New York Giants defensive front quickly vindicated general manager Adam Peters' decision.

Unfortunately, Rodriguez was an innocent bystander. The 2023 sixth-round pick was inactive for the clash, despite head coach Dan Quinn hinting that the player would become the team's option in short-yardage and goal-line situations. Those in power went with Jacory Croskey-Merritt, and the seventh-round rookie repaid this faith with a dazzling display on debut.

Commanders are keeping Chris Rodriguez Jr. on ice to begin the season

That left Rodriguez facing a depressingly familiar reality. The Kentucky product is on the fringes. This was evidenced once again when the backfield threat was inactive for Washington's showdown with the Green Bay Packers on Thursday Night Football.

It's nothing new for Rodriguez. He's had to bide his time before and come out on the other end smiling. The Commanders know that he'll be ready to go whenever his number is called. Until then, he'll be a great teammate and work tirelessly to help others while also trying to get back involved.

Rodriguez caught the eye this summer. His contact balance, breakaway ability, and on-field vision all took notable strides forward. The Commanders are going with others to begin the season, but don't be surprised if the third-year pro gets his opportunities later in the campaign as the punishment takes its toll on Austin Ekeler.

The Commanders' rushing attack fared extremely well in Week 1. If the same trend continues on Thursday Night Football with the national NFL audience watching on, it could be a while before Rodriguez gets his chance to impress.
