FRISCO, Texas — Cornerback Cobie Durant has a strained hamstring and safety P.J. Locke tore the plantar fascia in his foot, Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said Monday at The Star. Both players could miss a few weeks, Schottenheimer said.
Both got hurt in Sunday’s 37-20 win over the Washington Commanders at AT&T Stadium. Locke went down on a third down during Washington’s opening drive and walked off before he was taken to the locker room. Durant injured his hamstring in the final sequence of the first half, with the Commanders driving near the Dallas goal line. The Cowboys fly to Rio de Janeiro on Thursday night to play the Baltimore Ravens at Maracanã Stadium on Sunday.
Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and safety Malik Hooker are still in the rehab group from the season opener. Overshown has made good progress, Schottenheimer said, and Hooker is continuing his rehab.
“Got to get through the week,” Schottenheimer said. “It could be tough just because it’s a shorter week for us, but I’m not saying no.”
Overshown strained his hamstring in the 28-20 loss to the New York Giants on Sept. 13 after making 7 tackles. Schottenheimer said the next day that Overshown would miss one to two weeks. Hooker fractured his forearm in the same game and had surgery that Tuesday. Both were inactive against Washington, and Dallas elevated linebackers Curtis Robinson and Justin Barron from the practice squad for depth.
Dallas has not made a decision on whether to place Locke on injured reserve, Schottenheimer said. A player placed on injured reserve must miss at least four games. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told 105.3 The Fan that he does not expect Locke or Durant to go on injured reserve, Cowboys On SI reported.
Locke’s tear is a complete one rather than a partial tear. That is the better of the two outcomes, Schottenheimer said, and the first week is the sore one.
“That is correct. You and I are both learning about doctor stuff,” Schottenheimer said. “But yeah, they say it’s better. It’s pretty sore for a week. And then it begins to heal much quicker when you tear it fully.”
Locke signed with Dallas in free agency after his time with the Denver Broncos and was starting at safety with Hooker out. Markquese Bell took his snaps Sunday. Durant signed with Dallas this offseason after four seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, where he had 141 tackles, 7 interceptions, 26 passes defensed, and 2 defensive touchdowns. Second-year cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. replaced him. The injuries were first detailed in Sunday’s coverage of the Commanders game.
Rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham suffered a stinger Sunday, and linebacker Dee Winters hurt his shoulder early in the second quarter. Both returned. Winters led Dallas with 9 tackles, and he recovered the fumble Barham forced on his first play back in the game.
Barham was OK after the game, Schottenheimer said, and so was Winters. Neither is expected to need his workload managed in Rio.
“No, I think they’re going to both be fine,” Schottenheimer said. “Jaishawn was OK. Dee as well. But no, both those guys should be fine.”
Baltimore is 1-1 after beating the Indianapolis Colts 41-23 and losing 24-17 to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. The Cowboys are the designated home team at Maracanã, and kickoff is 3:25 p.m. CT.
