The Dallas Cowboys announced bad news on Wednesday, adding another name to the list of legends the league has lost in the last year. Nearly two weeks after Chicago Bears icon Mike Ditka tragically died, another player departed from this world.

The Cowboys have experienced multiple losses recently, too. Back in June, the troubled wide receiver Lance Rentzel passed away at 82. Before that, in June, a former running back passed away at 72.

More bad news arrived for the Lone Star this week.

The team wrote on Wednesday that they had “unfortunately lost another great.” Cornell Green, a legendary defensive back, passed away today at 86. He spent his entire career with the Cowboys, retiring after the 1974 season.

Dallas issued a statement on the passing.

“We are sad to share news of the passing of Cowboys Legend Cornell Green this morning. Cornell was a true trailblazer having never played football in college, yet becoming a multi-time Pro Bowler, All Pro and NFL Super Bowl Champion with the Cowboys playing defensive back from 1962 to 1974. He was a member of the 25th Anniversary Cowboys Team as well. Cornell remarkably never missed a game in 13 seasons, becoming one of the best and most dependable teammates to ever wear the star. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

He never missed a game in 13 seasons, leading the Cowboys in interceptions four times. He became a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro as a cornerback. After moving to safety, he collected two more Pro Bowl nods. Green helped the Cowboys capture Super Bowl VI against the Miami Dolphins.

Rest In Peace!
