Deshaun Watson Is Struggling at Browns Training Camp

Reports on Watson’s Training Camp Struggles 

In Watson’s first training camp practice, he threw back-to-back interceptions. Watson is getting reps with the first team, as reported by Zac Jackson of The Athletic. Jackson went on to say: “a prolonged series of misses, picks and floaters.” Jackson also pointed out something very interesting: "Both rookie Browns receivers KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston worked exclusively with the second team and Shedeur Sanders. Both are expected to be key pieces to the Browns’ offensive attack this season.” If Watson continues to struggle, the leash could become shorter for Sanders to be thrust into the starting quarterback role. 

Todd Monken’s Thoughts on the Browns Quarterback Competition 

Head coach Todd Monken went on to say: “ The easiest way for me to say that, and it still won't stop you from asking, not you particularly, but everybody in general, is the first game," Monken said when asked when he will announce his starting quarterback. "We're going to have to have a starter for the first game, right? I mean, ultimately, I'm not going to decide who the starter is. They decide by their play. Their play decides who the starter is.

"I don't have any preconceived notions of how they played in the past or how they're going to play. I only can, with my eyes, judge. And guys got to play well around them. I think we've shored up some things up front. We've added some weapons on the perimeter, so I think that's going to help. But they'll decide who plays. I don't decide who plays. The players decide who plays."

Future of the Cleveland Browns Quarterback Room

With Deshaun Watson’s struggles and only under contract this season, Watson is no more than a one-year rental. You can’t see the Browns giving Watson another contract and letting him walk in free agency after this season. It would make sense for the Browns to see what they have with a full sample size of Shedeur Sanders to determine if Sanders is the long-term solution or if it may be time by midseason to tank for the University of Texas star quarterback Arch Manning’s services in the 2027 NFL Draft.
