Detroit Lions Should Make a Bold Trade for Cardinals Star Josh Sweat Before NFL Deadline

The Detroit Lions have an opportunity to strengthen their defense before the NFL trade deadline, and Arizona Cardinals edge rusher Josh Sweat should be near the top of their wish list.

Detroit has spent the past several seasons establishing itself as a legitimate NFC contender. However, if the Lions want to make a serious run at the Super Bowl, adding another proven pass rusher could make a significant difference.

Sweat, a former Philadelphia Eagles standout and Super Bowl champion, brings experience, athleticism and the ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks. Although his 2026 season has gotten off to a disappointing start, his previous production suggests he still has plenty to offer.

The veteran recorded 12 sacks during the 2025 season, demonstrating his ability to disrupt opposing offenses. His combination of speed and strength makes him a difficult matchup for offensive tackles, particularly when defenses create favorable one-on-one opportunities.

For Detroit, pairing Sweat with Aidan Hutchinson could give the Lions one of the more dangerous defensive combinations in the NFC.

Why I Believe Josh Sweat Would Work in Detroit

In my opinion, the Lions should seriously consider pursuing Sweat because he would immediately take pressure off Hutchinson.

Opposing offenses understand Hutchinson’s ability to change games and often design protection schemes around slowing him down. Adding Sweat would force offensive coordinators to make difficult decisions about which defender deserves additional attention.

If teams decide to double-team Hutchinson, Sweat could benefit from favorable matchups. If they focus on Sweat, Hutchinson could have more opportunities to disrupt the pocket.

That is the type of defensive advantage Detroit needs when facing elite quarterbacks in the postseason.

Another reason I believe this trade makes sense is Sweat’s championship experience. He understands what it takes to compete in meaningful games, and that experience could be valuable for a Lions organization determined to reach the Super Bowl.

Detroit doesn’t necessarily need Sweat to produce double-digit sacks immediately. The Lions need another dependable defender capable of generating pressure, setting the edge and making opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable.

Could Arizona Be Willing to Make a Deal?

Sweat’s situation with Arizona makes him an intriguing trade candidate. The veteran reportedly experienced a contract dispute during the offseason and at one point requested a trade. Although he has two years remaining on his contract, the money beyond the current season is not guaranteed.

That uncertainty could make Arizona more willing to listen to offers, particularly if the Cardinals fall out of playoff contention. For Detroit, the biggest questions would involve the asking price and whether the organization could reach a long-term financial agreement with Sweat.

I wouldn’t recommend surrendering significant draft capital without understanding his contract expectations. However, if the Lions could acquire him for reasonable compensation, the potential reward could outweigh the risk.

Detroit has the offensive talent to compete with nearly anyone in the NFL. Strengthening the defensive front could be what separates another playoff appearance from a legitimate championship run.

Sweat may not be having his best statistical season, but his track record deserves consideration.

If I’m running Detroit’s front office, I’m making the phone call to Arizona. The Lions should be looking for players who can help them win now, and Sweat fits that description.
