Do Giants players still have confidence in QB Russell Wilson?

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll confirmed on Monday that he will start veteran quarterback Russell Wilson over promising rookie Jaxson Dart for Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton was asked during his media availability on Monday about Wilson remaining atop the depth chart following New York's 21-6 Week 1 loss to the Washington Commanders.

Why Giants have "full confidence" in Russell Wilson

"I've got full confidence," Slayton said about Wilson, via Giants.com. "I think he's shown himself throughout this whole time that he's been here in the offseason and throughout training camp that he's a competent quarterback. He's plenty equipped to do the job, and we all have full faith in him."

Multiple analysts spent Monday campaigning for Daboll to start Dart in Dallas after Wilson completed 17-of-37 passes for 168 yards in the loss to Washington. According to ESPN stats, Wilson began Tuesday ranked 28th in the league among qualified players from Week 1 with a 25.5 adjusted QBR and 29th with a 59.3 passer rating.

Nevertheless, Slayton believes that Giants fans who want the team to make a quarterback change "as soon as they think that things aren't going well" need to pump the brakes.

Giants aren't panicking about Russell Wilson

"The reality is that things take time, and not everything is just a 9-1-1 situation," Slayton continued. "We have good coaches. We have a good quarterback in Russell Wilson, and it's one week. I think in the history of football, if you kind of look at the history of football, it hasn't always served people well to just throw people in the fire, because I know that I wouldn't want to be thrown in the fire like that."

Daboll and Giants general manager Joe Schoen have long clarified that they want Dart to spend at least a portion of the season developing as a backup. However, other members of the locker room could check out if they feel the club isn't starting the best quarterback on the roster.

Slayton suggested Daboll isn't yet facing a player mutiny regarding his handling of the quarterback situation.

"Russ is our starter for however long, and he's playing and he's going to play good ball," Slayton added. "We're going to play good ball as an offense, and whenever Jaxson's time comes, it comes."

If the Giants fall to 0-2 on the season, Dart's time could come when Big Blue hosts the Kansas City Chiefs for a Week 3 "Sunday Night Football" matchup on Sept. 21.
