Dolphins Invite UFL Player to Tryout
The Miami Dolphins are inviting current United Football League player Major Burns to a tryout. The 24-year-old defensive back spent the season with the Houston Gamblers.
Burns entered college with the Georgia Bulldogs in 2020, but quickly transferred to his hometown team, the LSU Tigers. He was an impactful and versatile piece for them. As a senior with the team, he struggled in coverage and as a tackler, which led to him being left out of any draft talks and not receiving an invite to the NFL Combine. At his Pro Day with LSU, he measured in at 6 feet 2 and ran a 4.51-second 40-yard dash. He was signed by the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent but was injured early on and subsequently released.
He has been with the Houston Gamblers since March. In 9 games with the club, he has recorded 45 tackles, 8 pass breakups, and a huge 4 interceptions. Burns has been one of the best in the UFL on the defensive side of the ball.
Miami is getting a head start on meeting with UFL standouts, as the playoffs are set and players from eliminated teams are now free agents. Burns is one of the first announced players to meet with an NFL team. If he has a successful workout and is signed, he would be joining a thin safety room. Currently, it seems Dante Trader is the only safety with a head on the starting lineup.
With one of the thinnest and most inexperienced defensive back rooms in the NFL, it is no surprise to see Miami targeting someone with professional experience and strong production at that level. Burns was also a multi-year starter at a respected and talented college. There is no news regarding a potential signing for Burns. If anything transpires, it will be later in the week.
