Dolphins Release LB Tyrel Dodson, Set 53-Man Roster

The Dolphins have made a series of roster moves to reach the 53-man limit. Here is the full breakdown:

Dodson was claimed off waivers midway through the 2024 season. He played nearly half of the team’s defensive snaps upon arrival, and then took on a full-time starting role for 2025. Dodson was set to carry a cap charge of $3.68MM this season as a pending free agent, but the Dolphins have moved on and generated a dead money charge of just $718K in the process. The team’s new regime has certainly not been shy about cutting bait with inherited players.

Hunter was acquired from the Rams in the recent TuTu Atwell trade. Losing him on waivers would certainly represent a blow given he was the only player exchanged for Atwell in the swap, with no picks being moved. In any case, today’s move demonstrates how the 2025 fourth-rounder is not seen as a key figure in Miami’s setup to start the year.

The quarterback position continues to see notable turnover with Gronowski and Miller being waived. Quinn Ewers was traded away yesterday, while Kyle McCord was acquired in a swap with the Packers earlier today. Depending on how things play out with Gronowski and Miller on the waiver wire, further additions may be necessary leading up to Week 1.

Each of Grant, Moore, Baker and Duck are set to miss at least the first four weeks of the season as they recover. Of Miami’s eight in-season IR activations, two have already been accounted for in the form of Grant and Moore.
