Longtime NFL quarterback Drew Brees had one of the greatest careers in league history. He completed 67.7% of his passes, while throwing for 80,358 yards and 571 touchdowns in his 20-year NFL career. He made 13 Pro Bowls, won two AP Offensive Player of the Year Awards and is a Super Bowl champion.
Brees was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft out of Purdue. He spent his first five years in the NFL with the Chargers and the final 15 seasons with the New Orleans Saints.
The 46-year-old is now working in broadcasting after he retired in 2020. He is a weekly contributor on ESPN's "First Take."
Brees is originally from Austin, Texas, where he attended Westlake High School. As a junior at Westlake, he threw for 1,966 yards before a knee injury ended his year. In 1996, however, as a senior, Brees earned first-team all-state honors while passing for 3,529 yards, which was the best in Class 5A by over 1,000.
That year, he led the Chaparrals to a 5A Division II state title. In his high school career, Brees went 28-0-1 as Westlake's starting quarterback.
On Thursday, Brees' high school alma mater made an announcement about the former star quarterback.
"We honor one of our own on Friday night as Football will retire Lifetime Chap, Drew Brees’ 15 jersey. The first 1,000 fans will receive a commemorative t-shirt so get there by 7pm. Brees’ 15 is the first jersey to be retired in 56 seasons of football in Westlake. #GoChaps," Westlake wrote on X.
Westlake is currently 6-1 on the season and is the No. 6 team in Texas, according to MaxPreps. The Chaparrals will take on the Lake Travis Cavaliers, who are 7-0 and ranked No. 7, on Friday.
With Brees in attendance, he will hope to excite his former school for a battle of two Texas high school powerhouses.
