Falcons add quarterback depth ahead of final preseason game

One of the biggest takeaways from the Falcons’ second preseason game was just how much trouble this team would be in if Easton Stick or Emory Jones were ever forced to start a regular-season contest.

Thankfully, Atlanta doesn’t have to worry about that scenario for now. Michael Penix Jr. is firmly entrenched as the future, and the Falcons still employ the best — and most expensive — backup quarterback in the league in Kirk Cousins. That said, there’s no guarantee Cousins remains on the roster for long. It only takes one team facing a quarterback crisis to spark trade interest in a proven veteran like him, and the Falcons should remain open to moving him if the right opportunity presents itself.

That makes the battle for QB3 a little more important than it may appear on the surface. Easton Stick feels like the frontrunner for that job at the moment, but that’s not saying much. With Emory Jones suffering a head injury against the Titans, some extra depth has been acquired in the form of Ben DiNucci.

DiNucci was a seventh round pick of the Cowboys back in 2020 and actually appeared in three games that year, going 23-of-43 for 219 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

In his most recent action, DiNucci guided the Seattle Sea Dragons to a playoff berth in the XFL, throwing for 2,671 yards and 20 touchdowns compared to 13 interceptions in 10 games. He then spent time with the Broncos, Bills, and Saints, primarily on the practice squad, before signing with the Falcons.
