Father reveals when Tom Brady told family about retirement

There's yet another sign that Tom Brady is serious about his retirement this time around.

After Brady announced on Wednesday morning he was retiring "for good," Tom Brady Sr., the famous quarterback's father, told Ben Volin of the Boston Globe that the seven-time Super Bowl champion informed him of the decision "about a week ago." Brady Sr. added the family is "not shocked by any means" this winter.

"He has played football for 32 years out of his 45, living his dream for three-fourths of his life," Brady Sr. remarked. "It’s been a wonderful ride. He’s very secure in his decision. It’s about time."

Cameras caught Brady greeting his parents shortly after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost 31-14 at home to the Dallas Cowboys in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

Brady then seemed to offer some sort of farewell via postgame comments that caused individuals such as Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen to believe the G.O.A.T. had taken his final snap as an active NFL player.

It was first reported on Jan. 28, 2022, that Brady was "preparing to retire from the game" and would make an announcement "in the coming days." Brady Sr. disputed that story the following day, but TB12 then confirmed his retirement on Feb. 1. That hiatus only lasted until March 13 but also occurred long before Brady and Gisele Bündchen announced their divorce after 13 years of marriage on Oct. 28.

"This has been a hard year," Brady Sr. admitted during his comments. "I’m really happy for Tommy from the standpoint that he’s going to be able to spend more time with his kids. He’s going out on his own terms, and he’s in good health."

ESPN's Jeff Darlington shared inside information last week about how the divorce impacted Brady throughout this season. Darlington insisted on Wednesday that the future Hall of Famer is "done-done" and won't reconsider this retirement even though teams such as the San Francisco 49ers presumably would've considered signing Brady if he hit free agency in March.

Brady's parents still live in his hometown of San Mateo and could've watched him play home games at San Francisco's Levi's Stadium, but it wasn't to be.

"We would’ve enjoyed him playing in San Francisco, but we’re much happier with his decision doing this than playing for the 49ers," Brady Sr. told Volin.
