Former Bears Coach Matt Eberflus Is Close To A New Job

Matt Eberflus won't be a head coach in the NFL next season, but fans should expect to see him back on the sideline.

Eberflus was fired by the Chicago Bears after a 4-8 start to the 2024 season. The front office reached its breaking point after the team had a clock management meltdown in the final minute of its loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day. Team president Kevin Warren had this to say after firing Eberflus: "We understand how imperative the head coaching role is for building and maintaining a championship-caliber team, leading our players and our organization."

During his tenure with the Bears, Eberflus had a 14-32 record. Although he didn't have success in the Windy City, he's expected to be a hot commodity this hiring cycle.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Cincinnati Bengals are considering Eberflus for their opening at defensive coordinator. The Bengals relieved longtime defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo of his duties after Week 18. He's been running Cincinnati's defense since 2019.

Eberflus would be an interesting option for the Bengals. Before he became the head coach of the Bears, he called defensive plays for the Indianapolis Colts. His unit was ranked ninth in scoring defense during the 2021 season.

Fowler added that Eberflus "should be in the coordinator mix league-wide" this offseason.

If Eberflus does get the job in Cincinnati, he'll be tasked with fixing a defense that ranked 26th in points allowed and 30th in defensive red zone efficiency. That's not exactly any easy task.

The Bengals have already interviewed Patrick Graham and DeMarcus Covington for the job. It's unclear when they'll pick a new defensive coordinator.
