FUMBLE: Kevin Warren Unpreparedness Might’ve Sealed Fate Of New Bears Stadium

The Illinois spring session of Congress ends at the conclusion of May, which is Sunday night. Everyone knew the PILOT bill on the table, centering around the plans for a Chicago Bears stadium, would go down to the wire. However, one day before the deadline, a plot twist has come forward. Because Bears President Kevin Warren royally botched his plan for Arlington Heights, Illlinois lawmakers would rather see the Bears stay in Chicago. Or, possibly, the best-case scenario for them is to head to Hammond, Indiana.

As the session broke late on Saturday night, Senator Bill Cunningham confirmed that nothing had been signed. Via his X account, Brenden Moore quoted Cunningham as saying, “The proposal that the Bears have put out there does not have the support to pass.” Warren’s unpreparedness has led Chicago representatives and state legislators to want the Bears to either stay in Chicago or leave Illinois entirely. Something needs to be decided by the end of the day on Sunday.

Arlington Heights was always the first option for the Bears. That is what they wanted most, but they toyed with other options to gain leverage in tax negotiations. Now, in an antagonizing turn of events, it’s now the worst option with hours left to make something happen. The Bears now have to find a way to keep the franchise playing home games in Chicago. Or, they must significantly improve their plan for Arlington Heights. If not, it seems lawmakers are more content to let the Bears walk to Hammond, Indiana, than deal with it.

Kevin Warren Close to Cementing His Legacy as Chicago Bears Stadium is in Jeopardy.

Kevin Warren was hired by the Chicago Bears in January of 2023. In February, the team announced the purchase of land in Arlington Heights. The plot has been sitting there, waiting to see what Warren and the Bears are going to do with it. All along, the speculation has been a stadium with a village, all owned by the Bears, that would maximize their profits and boost the value of the franchise.

Now, over 3 years later, the Bears are no closer to a stadium in Arlington Heights than they were when they purchased the land. In fact, they’re much closer to leaving the state of Illinois entirely. The whole process has been botched. The blame should fall at the feet of Warren, who has been exposed as unprepared from the jump.

As we possibly near the conclusion of this saga, nobody is a winner. The Bears could leave the state, and the lawmakers could be the ones who push them out. But at the end of the day, whatever happens, it will be Warren’s legacy that is the biggest loser of it all.
