Giants inviting locker room trouble with handling of offseason?

After agreeing to a lucrative long-term deal with quarterback Daniel Jones this offseason, the New York Giants don't seem inclined to do the same for several of the team's standouts. NFL insider Michael Lombardi warns that this strategy could create a "chronic" feeling of discontent within the Giants' locker room.

On this week's "The GM Shuffle" podcast, Lombardi said, considering Jones' value to the Giants, that refusing to pay the likes of Saquon Barkley and Dexter Lawrence, sends a bad message to the rest of the team.

"Everybody in that locker room knows the reason they won wasn't because of Daniel Jones," Lombardi said. "He had something to do with it, but he didn't carry the team. The players know this. You can't con the players."

On March 7, the Giants agreed to a four-year with Jones worth up to $160 million with $35 million in incentives. On the same day, the Giants slapped the non-exclusive tag on Barkley.

Earlier this week, Barkley revealed that he wouldn't attend Giants' offseason workouts beginning on Monday. On Wednesday, reports indicated that Lawrence would join Barkley in missing OTA's.

It's still possible that the Giants could agree to extensions with Barkley and Lawrence. However, it's more likely that Barkley will play on the franchise tag for $10.1 million and Lawrence on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal for $12.4 million in 2023.

If the stalemate continues with Barkley and Lawrence, Lombardi's concerns may come to fruition, leaving the Giants' cupboard lacking two Pro Bowlers come next season.
