Green Bay Packers release UDFA quarterback Kyron Drones

The Green Bay Packers are getting a bit more settled at quarterback following an offseason that saw Malik Willis leave in free agency. On Saturday, the franchise announced that it had released quarterback Kyron Drones.

Drones had been competing with former Ohio State and Syracuse standout Kyle McCord for the third-string quarterback job. Drones was picked up by Green Bay as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia Tech following the 2026 NFL Draft.

Kyron Drones spent the last three years suiting up for the Hokies after initially beginning his college career at Baylor. He had varying degrees of success but showed some real bright spots at times.

As a senior in 2025, Drones threw for 1,919 yards passing and 17 touchdowns, against nine interceptions. He also ran for 644 yards and a career-best nine touchdowns, providing a threat on the ground.

During his career in college, Kyron Drones threw for 5,784 yards and 45 touchdowns versus 19 interceptions. He also ran for 1,847 yards and 22 scores.

With Kyron Drones now out, the quarterback picture for Green Bay appears pretty straightforward. Jordan Love is the starter and will be backed up by Tyrod Taylor. McCord will serve as the emergency third-string option.

Former Green Bay great reveals diagnosis

About two weeks before the news of Kyron Drones’ release hit the airwaves, a Green Bay Packers legend announced a serious diagnosis. Former running back Ahman Green is battling Parkinson’s disease.

Green revealed his diagnosis on the Go Long podcast, saying he was tested in January 2025 and held off on making his diagnosis public for a long time so he could inform friends and family first. He described some of his early symptoms on the podcast.

According to Green, some of the early signs were twitching in his feet during his sleep and short-term memory loss. The twitching apparently began shortly after his retirement from the NFL in 2009.

Now that his diagnosis is public, Green wants others to feel comfortable with seeking early treatment and early diagnosis. It can make a significant difference.

“It needs to be up front,” Ahman Green said, according to Yahoo! Sports. “It needs to be a topic that’s always hit. And it’s not the end all. … To me, I have a jump ahead of it. Just like anybody discovering that they have some type of cancer in their body, I’m ahead of it right now.”
