Has Joe Burrow been sending messages to Bengals with comments about offseason moves?

Quarterback Joe Burrow has made it known several times this spring that he is thrilled with how the Cincinnati Bengals' front office attempted to improve the club's roster this offseason via moves that included acquiring defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II from the New York Giants ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.

For a piece published on Tuesday, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated suggested that Burrow wants his teammates to embrace lofty goals before training-camp practices get underway later this summer.

"Re: Joe Burrow’s comments … I’ve always thought Burrow has a great feel for whatever his locker room needs to hear," Breer wrote. "And I’d take what he said as putting a little urgency on a group that he thinks is good enough to chase a championship."

Burrow signed a five-year, $275M contract extension in September 2023, but he more recently generated headlines when he said this past December that he needed "to have fun [playing] again." Multiple reports then emerged during the winter hinting that Burrow could consider asking for a trade next offseason if he is unhappy with the state of the franchise at that time. 

Since those stories first surfaced, the Bengals have added Lawrence, safety Bryan Cook, safety Kyle Dugger, edge-rusher Boye Mafe and defensive tackle Jonathan Allen to their roster. Following those moves, Burrow has said that the Bengals now "have everything we need" and have assembled "the most talented roster that we've had since" Cincinnati made him the first overall choice of the 2020 draft. 

What do Bengals have to do for Joe Burrow to be happy at this point next year?

"Remember," Breer added, "after making consecutive AFC title games in Burrow’s second and third years, the Bengals have missed the playoffs three consecutive years."

Breer stopped short of saying Burrow wants the Bengals to have a Super-Bowl-or-bust mindset for the 2026 season. That said, it sounds like some members of the NFL community are convinced the pressure is on Cincinnati to at least play in one playoff game this coming January. 

Of course, Burrow's health may ultimately determine whether or not the Bengals are part of postseason conversations around Christmastime. He has a worrisome injury history, and a serious toe issue caused him to miss nine games during the 2025 season.
