Roster decisions this late in the offseason can make a massive difference. For the Houston Texans, they're keeping one of their own in house for more time than previously projected. In case of emergency, they've got a quarterback they trust plenty behind C.J. Stroud.

Texans give contract extension to Davis Mills

According to reports, the Texans have signed backup quarterback Davis Mills to a one-year, fully-guaranteed contract extension. The deal is worth $7 million. The organization holds Mills in high regards and believes in him as the best option backing up C.J. Stroud.

Mills was going to enter free agency after this season. Now, that won't be the case for the backup that Houston absolutely loves in his role.

The Houston Texans believe that Davis Mills is one of, if not the best, backup quarterbacks in the NFL. After starting nearly two full seasons for the Texans before C.J. Stroud was drafted, they know they have someone they can rely on to play a few games if Stroud ever misses due to injury. Mills is 5-19-1 in his career as a starter, but that was back when the Texans had virtually no like around him. That’s not to say he would have been great with this current iteration of the squad, but he would certainly be a great backup quarterback with the weapons the Texans have now out around Stroud. Mills is getting paid as a top backup in the league by the team that drafted him, and honestly, he deserves it after everything he’s been through with the franchise. -- Justin Churchill, A to Z Sports

Potential offensive line concerns

The offensive line for Houston has undergone some adjustments this offseason. They have faith in rookie offensive tackle Aireontae Ersery. The interior has some new pieces in Jake Andrews and Ed Ingram. Some prior starters for the Texans are depth now - or elsewhere due to trades or cuts.

Houston must keep Stroud upright this season. Their best outcome is if Mills actually doesn't play. That being said, an injury to Stroud would not completely doom the Texans, in their opinion. Based on this deal for Mills, they're confident he can keep the ship afloat if they did have to deal with timeout their young starting QB.
