How Jakobi Meyers Saved The Jacksonville Jaguars Offense

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ newest addition was just what the Jaguars needed.

During the midseason trade deadline, there were multiple moves involving first-round picks and star-caliber players. Out of every trade, the most valuable of all is turning out to be Jakobi Meyers. Previously with the Las Vegas Raiders, Meyers was sent to Jacksonville immediately after an overtime loss against the Jaguars. He asked for a trade back in August, as he didn’t see a future that involved him remaining with the silver and black. Jacksonville General Manager James Gladstone answered Meyers’ prayers, trading a 2026 fourth-round pick and a sixth-round pick for the “disgruntled” receiver.

The Missing Piece

It was no secret around the league that the Jaguars were facing major issues in the receiving core. Losing first-round pick Travis Hunter to a knee injury during a practice was a major blow after a career game. Free agent addition Dyami Brown wasn’t living up to expectations. Most discouraging of all was Brian Thomas Jr and his 13% drop rate after a historic rookie season. Drops have been a consistent issue throughout the Jacksonville season. GM James Gladstone acknowledged this issue, saying that Meyers’ “Superpower” was “not dropping the football.”

Since Meyers joined the Jaguars, he’s amassed 22 receptions for 284 yards and four touchdowns. These aren’t earth-shattering numbers, but they don’t tell the full story. Meyers has opened up the Jacksonville offense to a degree that makes it easier for everyone else to do what they do best. For example, before Meyer’s arrival, Brian Thomas Jr. was being sent over the middle of the field for short-intermediate passes. It wasn’t working whatsoever, as most of his success as a rookie came downfield, outside the numbers.

Upon Meyer’s arrival, he would slide into that role. His dependable hands and experience make him perfect for what the receiving core needed. In the Jaguars’ most recent contest, the progression of the passing game was in full effect. Thomas was only targeted four times, but he hauled in three passes for 81 yards. The evolution of the downfield passing game with Meyers taking on Thomas’s previous role is paying off, and the stats prove it.

Bringing The Best Out Of Trevor Lawrence

Trevor Lawrence had an up-and-down start to the 2025 season, facing justified scrutiny for turnovers and accuracy issues. Since the addition of Meyers, Lawrence has vastly improved. He has a 98.4 passer rating when throwing to Meyers, as opposed to Lawrence’s 79.9 passer rating before acquiring the veteran pass catcher. The Jaguars are 4-1 since this move, with his most recent performance being a career highlight.

End Of My Jakobi Meyers Rant

Following the most recent victory against the Indianapolis Colts, it was interesting to compare the trades made by each team. Indianapolis gave up two first-round picks for star cornerback Sauce Gardner. The Colts have since fallen out of favor, and Gardner hasn’t been able to stay healthy. Indianapolis’s longtime General Manager Chris Ballard might be on his last leg after precipitating a move before an unforeseen disaster.

Give credit to Jaguars GM James Gladstone for making a valuable move that’s helping Jacksonville push for the AFC South crown. The Jaguars will look to keep the offense rolling against Aaron Glenn and the New York Jets defense this Sunday.
