How the Kansas City Chiefs arrived at Super Bowl LV

The Chiefs have earned their second consecutive trip to the Super Bowl, as they try to "run it back" in Super Bowl LV against the Buccaneers. Here's how they got this far.

Kansas City picked up where they left off last season with an easy 34-20 win to open the year. Clyde Edwards-Helaire made noise in his NFL debut with 25 carries for 138 yards and one touchdown, while Patrick Mahomes threw three touchdowns.

The Chiefs got quite the scare on the road against surprise Chargers starting quarterback Justin Herbert, making his first career appearance after Tyrod Taylor suffered an injury in pregame. KC came back from a 17-9 deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game on a Harrison Butker field goal at 20-20 with no time remaining. Butker then kicked his second 58-yard field goal of the game in overtime to win.

Entering Week 3 as underdogs against the Ravens, KC had no trouble defeating the 2-0 Ravens on the road. Patrick Mahomes threw for 385 yards and four touchdowns, while the Chiefs defense held Baltimore to only 228 yards of total offense.

With Patriots starting quarterback Cam Newton out due to COVID-19, the Chiefs defense got an easy win over New England. Brian Hoyer threw for only 130 yards for the Pats, while Patrick Mahomes threw for 236 yards and two scores.

The Chiefs lost a shocker to the rival Raiders in a game marred by penalties and mistakes. KC was outgained on offense 490-413, with Derek Carr making several huge plays. Patrick Mahomes threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns.

Kansas City got a huge scare from the upstart Panthers squad but was able to escape after Joey Slye missed a 67-yard field goal at the end of regulation. Patrick Mahomes threw four touchdowns, including two touchdowns to Tyreek Hill.

Coming off a bye, the Chiefs were able to get revenge against Las Vegas after a Week 5 defeat. KC's defense still had their hands full as Derek Carr threw three touchdowns, but Patrick Mahomes was able to orchestrate a game-winning drive with less than two minutes remaining, concluding with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce.

Little did we know the Week 12 matchup between the Chiefs and Bucs would be a Super Bowl preview. Tyreek Hill had a historic first quarter with seven catches for 203 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter, but the Bucs were able to make the game interesting late after trailing 27-10 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs offense struggled in their Week 13 win vs. Denver but were able to do just enough to win. Patrick Mahomes threw for 318 yards and one touchdown to Travis Kelce.

Once again, the Chiefs jumped out to a big lead that they relinquished late against an opponent. KC led 30-10 after three quarters, but three interceptions from Patrick Mahomes allowed Miami back into the game.

Patrick Mahomes had another outstanding game in KC's 32-29 win over New Orleans. He threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns, and the Chiefs defense held Drew Brees in check, in his first game back from injury.

Kansas City was able to clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC despite a lackluster performance against the Falcons. Patrick Mahomes threw a game-winning 25-yard touchdown to Demarcus Robinson with 1:55 remaining, finishing the game with 278 yards passing and two touchdowns.

The Chiefs sat most of their star players in a 38-21 loss, only their second of the season. Chad Henne threw for 218 yards and two touchdowns, but Chargers rookie Justin Herbert was able to cap off his season with 302 yards passing and three scores.

The Divisional Round was a big scare for the Chiefs in more ways than one. The team needed a heroic pair of plays from backup quarterback Chad Henne at the end of the game after Patrick Mahomes was forced out due to a head injury. Ohio native Travis Kelce finished the game with eight catches for 109 yards and one touchdown.

With Patrick Mahomes returning from his head injury, the Chiefs had little trouble getting their second consecutive AFC Championship win. Mahomes threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns, while Tyreek Hill had nine catches for 172 yards.
