Packers first-round rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden is heating up at exactly the right time for Green Bay.
Sunday, Golden pulled down a career-high three catches for 86 yards, and is beginning to show the game-breaking speed he put on film at the University of Texas that drew general manager Brian Gutekunst and the Packers to select him in the first round of April’s Draft.
The Packers’ Week 6 victory over the Bengals wasn’t just the high-water mark of Golden’s career, so far, but could serve as the launching pad as he continues a steady upward ascent.
According to Pro Football Focus, Golden was the Packers’ highest-graded player in Sunday’s win, posting a 90.9 overall mark.
“He adds another explosive playmaker for us,” Love said of Golden, during his post game press conference. “I think he made some big-time plays today, with the go-ball down the sidelines and that last play to end.
“He’s a guy we’re going to keep trying to get going, keep finding ways to get him the ball, because he does some really nice things … He’s a very explosive playmaker, and we need to keep finding ways to get it to him.”
Over the past three weeks, Golden has now caught four passes of 30 yards or more, on his way to 14 receptions for 212 yards while averaging 15.1 yards per reception.
Golden’s speed is beginning to truly translate, and Love is continuing to build confidence in the young rookie receiver, which should be scary thoughts for opposing secondaries in the weeks ahead.
