Is Kevin O’Connell Really on the Hot Seat?

KOC has been a really great coach for the Vikings over his first four seasons with the team, racking up 43 wins, which ranks as the fifth-best total for a head coach over that time period. The problem for O’Connell isn’t necessarily the regular season but rather his inability to win in the postseason. Despite having solid team performances that result in good regular-season records, the Vikings still haven’t won a playoff game during the O’Connell era. 

The Vikings won their division in 2022 after going 13-4 during O’Connell’s first season as the head coach. Still, they lost surprisingly to the New York Giants during their one year of relevancy in their first year under Brian Daboll. The Vikings then missed the 2023 playoffs after Kirk Cousins got hurt and found their way into the playoffs in 2024 after the sudden re-emergence of Sam Darnold powered them to a 14-win season. Unfortunately for the Vikings, Darnold saw ghosts in LA and led the team to an abysmal 27-9 loss to the Rams. After that, the Vikings let Darnold walk, and we all know what happened last season. Now O’Connell enters his fifth year with the team with a reputation as a great regular season coach who can’t back it up in the playoffs.

The Vikings’ ownership may want a hard reset if things fully fall apart this year

That playoff question is likely to taint KOC’s value in the eyes of the owners, and that might be enough to get them to pull the trigger on a franchise reset if the Vikings end up with a terrible record and a chance at a QB like Arch Manning or Dante Moore in the draft. A new QB and a new head coach could usher in a brand-new era of Vikings’ football and reenergize a fanbase that is currently a bit lethargic. Obviously, Kevin O’Connell could avoid this situation by putting up a solid year this season and could put the entire conversation to bed by just winning a playoff game or two.
