Jaguars HC Offers Explanation for Brian Thomas Jr.’s Disastrous Performance Against Bengals

The Jacksonville Jaguars dropped to 1-1 on Sunday in a game that was a complete disaster.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow went down with a toe injury in the second quarter, but the Jaguars still managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence had an uneven day with two interceptions and a ton of inaccurate passes, but the biggest takeaway from the game was his No. 1 wide receiver, Brian Thomas Jr.

Controversial Performance From Thomas Jr.

The former first-round pick was ripped apart by fans and the media for allegedly shying away from contact and not giving maximum effort in an attempt to avoid taking big hits on receptions.

Lawrence and head coach Liam Coen appeared visibly frustrated in their postgame press conferences, but declined to make definitive statements on Thomas Jr.’s effort.

In a Monday media session, Coen stated that the star receiver played against the Bengals with a wrist injury, which he believes may have impacted his performance.

This seems like a coverup, but a good one by the first-year head coach, who was asked about Thomas Jr.’s performance after the game, but made no mention of an injury.

If the receiver truly is injured, it still wouldn’t explain why he slowed up multiple times in front of defenders.

Truthfully, Lawrence didn’t put him in the best positions either, consistently feeding him the ball in heavy traffic and far beyond his catch radius. Both seemed to share blame on some of the missed connections, but Thomas Jr. has been getting far more blame.

Jaguars Season Moving Forward

In Coen’s first year, the team has a ton of questions to answer, the main one being whether or not Lawrence is truly the guy going forward.

He isn’t bad by any means, but he’s fallen embarrassingly short of his college reputation as one of the greatest quarterback prospects of all time.

He’s thrown 49 interceptions in a little over four seasons in the NFL and has been largely inaccurate over that same span. After leading Jacksonville to the playoffs in 2023, he’s struggled to find that same success since.

The team has a challenging road ahead based on their opponents’ records from last year, so the next couple of months should give them a good indication of where Lawrence is at.

His chemistry with Thomas Jr. going forward will also play a major factor in how the team develops moving forward.

The former LSU Tigers star exploded at the end of last season with Mac Jones stepping in for Lawrence, so clearly talent isn’t an issue.

These aspects will be critical to determining whether the Jaguars can make a playoff push in a division mostly devoid of talent.
