Jalen Ramsey sends a cryptic message amid trade rumors and Miami Dolphins fans won't appreciate the likeliest explanation

Trade rumors surrounding Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey are growing by the minute and the All-Pro isn't doing much to slow them down.

Clearly, Ramsey's relationship with the Dolphins has been complicated from the start and now, not even a three-year contract extension signed in 2024 might be enough to salvage things. From trying to sabotage Miami by revealing its gameplan during the 2023 season to openly celebrating Vic Fangio's departure to now trade rumors emerging, it's a complicated state of affairs.

On Tuesday, Ramsey fueled the rumors by sending out a short and cryptic message on his X account (commonly known as Twitter).

"5...," read Ramsey's post. Even though it could mean nothing, Dolphins and NFL fans are doing their best to interpret what the heck the standalone number means. We do this every year with football stars in cloudy situations and understandably so. These athletes know exactly what they're doing when typing these posts out.

Though it's almost impossible to know what Ramsey means—if anything at all—the most likely explanation is one Dolphins fans won't appreciate.

Ramsey's "5" post was send in May 27th, five days before June 1, a key deadline in the NFL for players in his situation. If traded before June 1, the Dolphins are expected to virtually take a hit of $8.56 million in their salary cap, per Over the Cap. That means instead of saving anything, Ramsey would take up even more in their salary cap. In contrast, a post-June 1 trade would free up $9.91 million for Miami.

Unlike with player releases, teams can't designate a trade as a post June-1 move. Instead, the trade needs to occur after the date in question.

Whether or not a trade actually happens remains to be seen but it appears like Ramsey is packing his bags five days away from the big day.
