The New York Giants enter "Thursday Night Football" against the Philadelphia Eagles as 7.5-point home underdogs.
With New York coming off a tough loss to a New Orleans Saints team that was previously winless, things won't get any easier facing an Eagles defense that has held its own this season, having allowed no team to score 30 or more points on it.
If the Giants are to win this ball game and not get embarrassed on their home field, it will come off the back of their rookie quarterback, Jaxson Dart. After taking over for former Super Bowl winner and 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson, who went 0-3 with New York, Dart has done well as the Giants starting quarterback. He has posted a 1-1 record and thrown for 313 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
While Dart still only has two NFL games under his belt, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk believes that the QB has an opportunity to extend his "honeymoon period" with Giants fans if he can make a key play that leads to the Giants beating their division rival.
"We've seen enough from Dart for now to think that maybe something's there, and tonight, I think, is a great opportunity for him," Florio said on NBC’s "Pro Football Talk." "It could end the honeymoon, or it could prolong it, and it could cement like if he makes a big play in a big spot to win the game, ah la Trevor Lawrence on Monday night. Now hopefully he won't fall down twice before he does it, but if he makes some big play, some big throw, some big run and delivers a victory for the Giants, the legend of Jaxson Dart is born.”
Dart certainly could do as Florio said and have a breakout game against the Eagles after their defense allowed 18 unanswered points in the fourth quarter of their 21-17 loss against Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos in Week 5. Mixed with the Eagles' struggles on offense, it seems like a perfect recipe for Dart and the Giants to eke out a surprising win.
The Eagles could be down one of their best defensive linemen, Jalen Carter, who is "questionable" for Thursday's game, making it one less talented Eagles defender to worry about. Having two of the better defensive backs in the league, though, Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell, gives the Eagles the 15th-best passing defense (211.4 yards). That may make it hard for Dart to locate an open receiver.
Dart's skill set could still help his cause, though, as one of his strengths is his ability to vary snap counts, which leads to pre-snap penalties by the defense. The Eagles are 15th in defensive penalties (37).
If Dart and the Giants offense can establish the run early, which has been the Eagles' Achilles' heel (22nd, 126.8 yards), it should help set up the passing game, leading to Dart finding success. Dart alone has 109 yards rushing and one rushing touchdown in two games, which makes him a threat to scramble. Pro Football Focus projects that Dart will throw for 181 yards and have one passing touchdown, which could be enough to give the Giants a chance to bypass the Eagles, especially if they're down Carter.
