Jets' Nathaniel Hackett continues familiar defense of Zach Wilson

The song remains the same regarding what New York Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett and head coach Robert Saleh say about quarterback Zach Wilson: It's not all Wilson's fault the offense is struggling to produce touchdowns this fall.

"It’s not one person," Hackett said during a Thursday news conference, per Robert Sanchez of SNY. "We’ve talked about that for quite a while. Zach had some amazing plays last game keeping us alive. ... It’s been a lot of guys, I wish it was just one thing. Then you feel like that is easily correctable, but I think for us as a group it’s about staying together and pushing through this together. With adversity, we’ll create growth and that’s what we need."

Wilson made some positive highlight-reel plays in this past Sunday's 16-12 loss at the Las Vegas Raiders that dropped the Jets to 4-5, but he also tossed a costly and avoidable interception with fewer than 90 seconds remaining in regulation. While Hackett's offense scored eight touchdowns across nine games and none over the past 11 quarters of play, ESPN stats show the Jets enter Week 11 ranked 29th in the league with an average of 283.1 yards per contest and 30th with an average of 16.0 points per game.

Hackett made it known Thursday he's just fine with the fact that members of his offense held a players-only meeting following the defeat in Vegas.

"I love it," Hackett insisted. "I mean the whole idea is for those guys to come together...We work the entire week to get them as prepared as we possibly can. And we can talk and talk and talk and detail up, detail up, but if they don’t absorb it and they don’t feel it together as one group then it doesn’t matter what you call, it doesn’t matter what you do. So I think that for them to bond, to come together and understand that if we get these things fixed that we’ll have an opportunity to move the ball and score some more points."

For better or for worse, Hackett and Saleh are all-in on playing Wilson through at least the start of this Sunday's matchup at the 5-5 Buffalo Bills. As of Thursday afternoon, oddschecker listed Gang Green as a seven-point underdog for that AFC East clash.
