John Lynch: 49ers have held Brandon Aiyuk trade talks with other teams

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch met with reporters on Monday, as he does annually ahead of the NFL Draft. While wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk remains on the roster, the situation continues to point toward a likely departure from the Bay Area.

Lynch was asked where things stand with Aiyuk and whether the 49ers have engaged in trade discussions with other teams—potentially leading up to or during the 2026 NFL Draft, which begins Thursday.

The general manager confirmed that conversations have taken place, but tempered expectations about a deal materializing.

"I've had some discussions," Lynch said. "Do I think it's a high probability? Likely no. But is there a chance? Yeah, I think there's a chance."

At this stage, a release still appears to be the most likely outcome. However, the 49ers are not rushing the decision, opting instead to remain patient in case a wide receiver-needy team emerges with interest.

Lynch noted that last month's owners meetings presented a potential opportunity for movement, and the draft could offer another window for a deal to come together.

"So, I think we'll see it through here," Lynch said. "We'll focus on our draft. If something happens there, great. If not, we'll reevaluate it. He's still a member of this roster right now, and we'll treat him as such."

When pressed further on whether specific trade discussions have taken place, Lynch confirmed that the 49ers have indeed spoken with multiple teams regarding Aiyuk.

Aiyuk was expected to contribute during the 2025 season after recovering from the ACL and MCL injuries he sustained in 2024. However, that never materialized. Tensions between the player and the team escalated, ultimately leading Aiyuk to cut off communication with the 49ers, signaling the end of his time with San Francisco.
