Buffalo Bills wide receiver Keon Coleman was benched during the first series in the loss to the New England Patriots.
The reigning MVP and team captain in quarterback Josh Allen was quick to ensure the world knew that he has complete faith in his young wide receiver. It was a resounding message from the franchise quarterback. Allen was asked about Coleman's benching and what it means moving forward.
"A guy that, again, continues to work extremely hard. Trust zero, continuing to develop that rapport, but for him, late in the game, to score a touchdown, make a couple big plays for us. The third down jump ball, we're going to need more of that from him. It's not going to deter me from going his way at all."
Allen doubled down when asked if he thinks Coleman understands the severity of the situation.
"I think he understands, I think he knows," Allen said. "At the end of the day, this locker room, this team, you don't ever want to let your teammates down, and I think he understands that and he doesn't want to let us down. We move forward."

Allen's message wasn't just about Coleman; it echoed his stance after Sunday's loss. The MVP made it clear that accountability applies to everyone, but he's also determined to keep the locker room unified as they push through some early-season adversity.
It wasn't the first time Coleman had been benched in his career for disciplinary reasons, as the young receiver was sidelined for the entire first quarter in a victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
It's a frustrating occurrence that Coleman himself knows he needs to be better with. The second-year receiver opened up about the mistake, not calling it a setback but making it clear he's going to use it to fuel him toward great things as the season progresses.
“Yeah, for sure, things happen. You just gotta do your best to eliminate them [ . . . ] I mean, I wouldn’t call it a setback, it was just a growing pain in a sense,” Coleman said. “Yeah, it is frustrating cause you know you’re better than that as a person and individual. You don’t like the things that it shows; sometimes it might show that you don’t care, or things like that, and that’s not the case. Want to eliminate those things.”

How does he need to respond?

For Coleman, the lesson has already been learned. For Allen, the trust never wavered, even for a moment. It's the kind of quarterback-to-receiver connection that keeps a team steady when the outside noise starts to build up.
If Sunday was a bump in the road, both seem intent on turning it into a launch point for the offense moving forward.
