Keyon Martin appeared to be getting phased out of the Ravens’ cornerback rotation, as the second-year defender had not played a single defensive snap in the previous three games. However, against the Cleveland Browns, he returned to the rotation and played 24 snaps, earning a 71.2 overall grade according to Pro Football Focus.
Martin was not flawless, drawing multiple penalties throughout the afternoon. Nevertheless, his performance demonstrated that he might deserve more opportunities on defense rather than spending most of his time on special teams.
Martin’s most impactful sequence came on back-to-back plays late in the second quarter. First, he broke up a quick slant intended for KC Concepcion, reading the play well and breaking toward the receiver as soon as Deshaun Watson released the ball. Martin managed to position himself inside Concepcion, making the pass extremely difficult to complete.
On the following play, Martin came on a nickel blitz and quickly worked past a weak blocking attempt from running back Jaleel McLaughlin. Roquan Smith initially got his hands on Watson, but the quarterback managed to escape before Martin arrived to finish the job.
The pass breakup was the more impressive of the two plays and demonstrated Martin’s potential as a nickel cornerback. With teams increasingly moving their best receivers into the slot to manufacture favorable matchups, having a reliable defender at the position has become particularly important. This was Martin’s first meaningful defensive action in several weeks, so it would be a bit early to declare him a game-changer at nickel. However, he showed enough against Cleveland to warrant additional opportunities, potentially allowing Baltimore to rotate Martin and rookie Chandler Rivers while determining which player is better in the position.
