When you look at the Las Vegas Raiders' cornerback room, the potential just jumps off the page. They have so many young players in that room who can really become great players. And some of them had great moments last year.
When Jakorian Bennett was healthy, he was one of the better cornerbacks in the league. But, it didn't last long, as an injury took the rest of his season from him. Decamerion Richardson, as a rookie last season, was thrown into the fire due to injuries, played several different positions, and had some really good moments. But he also had some bad, rookie moments.
Then there is the rookie they drafted this year, Darien Porter, who looks really good on film and on paper, but he's a rookie, so we don't really know if he will be good or not. Then there are some young guys on the practice squad and down the depth chart that could develop into some fine players, with veterans sprinkled throughout, but they don't really have a star there.
And they really don't have a guy who can go and play against another team's number-one receiver every single snap. They need that, and now one is available. On Monday, the Green Bay Packers released star cornerback Jaire Alexander, who, yes, is a star, but seems to always be hurt.
But he's still a good cornerback in the NFL.
Jaire Alexander’s situation is a peculiar one. He’s still just 28 years old, but injuries over the past couple of years really soured his outlook and stock. For Las Vegas, it’s a question with a simple answer. Does adding Alexander give them more depth they severely lack at CB? For sure. Alexander is a former All-Pro, but no one should expect that caliber of play from him at this point. If he can play some solid snaps as a CB2, then the Raiders make all the sense in the world for him. Their situation at cornerback mimics the one in New Orleans quite a bit with some intriguing young players at the position - but also a lot of question marks when it comes to upside and experience in the pros. Now, if the money is right, the Raiders should absolutely do it. They have about $36 million in cap space, so they can do it, but they also need to think about the future with some of their rookie deals set to end within the next few years, and the potential Kolton Miller contract extension.
But Alexander can be a good player for the Raiders in 2025. It may feel like he's lost it, but he would instantly be the best guy on the Raiders, with maybe a debate for Bennett as that guy. Regardless, he will also serve as a veteran, and a guy who can show the young studs on the team with star potential, how to handle that.
They should definitely be picking up the phone to call him ASAP.
