Los Angeles Rams plan for getting talented rookie more involved on offense will ramp up soon, based on comments from Sean McVay

The Los Angeles Rams pulled off a savvy move during the 2025 NFL Draft, trading out of the first round and taking tight end Terrance Ferguson in the second round. Ferguson fit their exact mold of player they were looking for to change the nature of their offense, something we saw glimpses of in their Week 1 victory over the Houston Texans.

However, Ferguson didn't see much action offensively against the Texans, sitting behind all three of the other tight ends on the roster and mainly contributing on special teams. For a player with as much buzz behind him as Ferguson, it was a disappointing beginning to the season for the former Oregon Duck.

Don't fret, as it seems like Ferguson's workload will only begin to grow from here. Based on Sean McVay's comments this week, expect Ferguson's role to expand more and more every week until he eventually becomes the team's top tight end.

Terrance Ferguson Impressed Sean McVay Despite Lack of Role

While Ferguson's first outing might have been a disappointment for fans, it impressed head coach Sean McVay even though he didn't see any playing time on offense.

Speaking on the "Coach McVay Show" on Tuesday, McVay acknowledged that Ferguson's involvement needs more from McVay himself, but that Ferguson did impress McVay with his play on special teams and enthusiasm with his teammates despite his lack of a role.

"Ferguson is going to be a factor for us. We’ve got to be able to figure out a way to get him involved. He had the groin injury where he missed a bunch of time. That type of game, felt like that was going to be the best approach. Obviously, great having Higbee back. I think Colby Parkinson and Davis Allen have both improved tremendously, and Ferguson is a guy that’s going to be a really good player for us. I love his response in terms of making his presence felt where he could, but you look at who’s one of the first people to come out there and greet (Allen) with the salute, it’s Terrance Ferguson – after Davis catches the touchdown and then he’s out there playing wing on the field goal operation."

McVay also confirmed that Ferguson will be a more active part of the offense "sooner than later". The Rams deployed 12-personnel (two tight end sets) on 42% of their plays against Houston, one of their highest-rates under McVay ever and fourth-most in the NFL in Week 1.

If that continues, Ferguson is going to be an active part of the offense very quickly.
