Mattel's Magic 8 Ball has been predicting the future since 1946. We ran a few questions about the Washington Commanders by one, and it was rather optimistic about 2024.
For those unfamiliar with the concept, users ask yes–no questions to the ball, give it a shake and then turn it over to reveal the answer. We opted for an online version to ask the following:
Will Jayden Daniels win Offensive Rookie of the Year?
Magic 8 Ball says: You may rely on it.
For the second straight year, the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft wins the award. Quarterback C.J. Stroud did it by taking the moribund Texans to the divisional round of last year’s playoffs. He also improved the team’s record by seven wins.
It's official!

With the number 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft the Washington Commanders have selected LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Meanwhile, Daniels won the Heisman with LSU and is the only quarterback in FBS history to pass for 12,000 yards and rush for 3,000 yards in a career. He won’t have Nico Collins or Tank Dell to throw to, but a fifth straight 1,000 yard season from Terry McLaurin could do the trick.
Will Dan Quinn win Coach of the Year?
Magic 8 Ball says: It is decidedly so.
Better late than never. In 2021, Quinn was named the AP Assistant Coach of the Year as defensive coordinator with the Cowboys, but some thought he deserved more credit for taking the Falcons to Super Bowl LI in 2016.
Former Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett won the award after winning the NFC East, improving the team’s record by nine wins that year. A nine-win improvement would give the Commanders 13 wins and would make Quinn a favorite to take home the award in 2024.
Will the team’s 32nd-ranked secondary improve?
Magic 8 Ball says: Yes.
Washington can’t do any worse. It gave up a league-high 262.2 yards through the air last year, something the team hopes second-round pick Mike Sainristil can help fix from the slot-corner position.
The former Michigan Wolverine had six interceptions and seven passes defended as a first-team All-American in 2023 and fits perfectly with Washington, according to Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports:
"He will be a most frustrating element of Washington's defense for every offensive game plan and a portable piece for Quinn," Trapasso wrote. "With his smaller size, extreme explosiveness, and speed — not to mention a blue-collar work ethic through blockers and through the whistle, Sainristil will be an instant asset as a blitzer."
The team’s 39 sacks were seventh-most in the league last year, so whatever Sainristil brings will be welcomed.
Will the Commanders make the playoffs?
Magic 8 Ball says: Cannot predict now.
Luckily, ESPN BET can, and it gives Washington the third-worst odds (+600) to be an NFC wildcard team, slightly better than New York, who finished two games ahead of the Commanders in 2023.
See how it all comes together when the Commanders open the 2024 regular season in Tampa Bay against the Buccaneers on Sunday, Sept. 8.
