Even for teams like the Las Vegas Raiders that have struggled in recent history, the offseason brings reasonable optimism for success.
Sure, no one is expecting the Raiders to pull off a shocking Super Bowl win, and that is perfectly fine. However, look at a team like the Washington Commanders, who went from the second overall pick in last year’s draft to an NFC Championship appearance in one season. The path to a quick turnaround and, hopefully, sustainable success is open for all teams; it is just a matter of who is willing to seize the opportunity.
Raiders owner Mark Davis is perfectly aware of this, and his comments at the NFL’s Annual League Meeting on Monday confirmed his optimism.
“I say it every year, this is my favorite time — we are undefeated,” Davis said, via Vic Tafur of The Athletic.
For the Raiders, success has never felt more imperative. With head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Spytek at the helm, the Raiders will have new faces at both spots for the third straight season. If Davis wants to bring the Lombardi Trophy to Las Vegas, the revolving doors on the sidelines and the front office have to stop.
“I just didn’t get it right,” Davis said in regards to previous regimes. “That’s all there is to it.”
With the hopes of turning the fortunes of the Raiders around, Carroll and Spytek, along with the stewardship of minority owner Tom Brady, have put in the work this offseason.
Locking down superstar pass rusher Maxx Crosby, as well as trading for quarterback Geno Smith, instantly make the team stronger in the short term. However, the Raiders also saw serious turnover on their roster, particularly on defense. In a loaded AFC West that saw every team except the Raiders make the postseason last time, Davis is now preaching patience and the desire for improvement.
“You always want to compete, but you have to be honest,” Davis said. “Are we going to win the Super Bowl this year? I don’t know … it’s possible.”
Davis and the Raiders now await the draft to see if the Raiders can improve their current standing.
