Vikings quarterback Max Brosmer was a surprise inclusion on the team’s initial 53-man roster on Sunday, but he was waived a day later to make room for a waiver claim on the offensive line. On Tuesday, Brosmer cleared waivers and signed with Minnesota’s practice squad, according to insider Tom Pelissero.

It was a bit odd when the Vikings kept four quarterbacks on their first 53-man roster. It made more sense when it turned out he was a placeholder for a day. The Vikings may have always been planning on adding at least one waiver claim and cutting Brosmer on Monday. As SI’s Albert Breer noted, players might be more likely to pass through waivers on Tuesday than they would be during the initial chaos on Monday.
Frankly, it’s unclear if the Vikings had any real reason to be worried about a team claiming Brosmer on either day. He was a disaster when he saw the field last season, especially in a four-interception game against the Seahawks. Brosmer was in over his head, which wasn’t shocking for an undrafted rookie. But the former New Hampshire and Minnesota quarterback also struggled quite a bit this preseason, averaging just under five yards per attempt while throwing no touchdowns and one interception.
The Vikings have maintained that they still have belief in Brosmer despite his poor in-game results. He did play well in last year’s preseason and has been lauded for his processing ability after a strong college career. Bringing him back on the practice squad allows the Vikings to keep him around as a developmental fourth quarterback without taking up an active roster spot.
Here’s a look at the other 15 players on the Vikings’ practice squad.
There’s been no word yet about wide receiver Dillon Bell, the other player the Vikings cut on Monday, and whether or not he cleared waivers.
