New York Jets rookie named as first-rounder under most pressure

Every NFL rookie looks to make a difference right away; there is no doubt about that.

However, every player also has a different mandate, largely predicated on where they are drafted.

David Bailey, whom the New York Jets selected with the No. 2 overall pick in April’s NFL draft, must contribute immediately.

In his latest column, NFL.com’s Gennaro Filice listed Bailey as one of 12 rookies who need to succeed in Year 1.

“The Jets need Bailey to prove them right,” he wrote. “Aaron Glenn’s defense struggled mightily in the head coach’s debut season of 2025, giving up the second-most points in the league. If the Jets hope to get out of the AFC East cellar, they need to get after opposing quarterbacks, especially in a division that features 2024 MVP Josh Allen and 2025 MVP runner-up Drake Maye.

“Bailey boasts the kind of explosive get-off that should transition nicely to the NFL,” Filice continued. “He could be a liability against the rush as a smaller edge, but GM Darren Mougey beefed up New York’s front with powerful run-stuffers this offseason. Bailey was drafted to heat up passers like he did last season at Texas Tech, tying for the FBS lead with 14.5 sacks.”

In 2025, Bailey led the nation with 14.5 sacks, while his 81 total pressures ranked second in the FBS, just two behind Rueben Bain Jr., who had played two more games.

Any player drafted at No. 2 overall should contribute right away; that’s a given. However, it’s even more important in the Jets’ case.

The Jets bypassed Arvell Reese, who holds more untapped upside at No. 2, to select Bailey. This decision signaled that the team is prioritizing the more “finished” pass-rush product.

As we outlined in our recent sack projections, Bailey should log anywhere from 7 to 10 sacks in Year 1 while being in contention for Defensive Rookie of the Year, while showing steady improvement as a run defender throughout the year.

There are no excuses. David Bailey must significantly boost the New York Jets’ pass rush in 2026 as the No. 2 overall pick in his rookie season.
