NFL General Manager Disrespects 49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy

Despite having one of the best stories in NFL history, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy continues to face criticism from his doubters.

Purdy was initially thought of as just another Mr. Irrelevant when the 49ers selected him with the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. And yet, when the 49ers needed him to take over for an injured Jimmy Garoppolo, he stepped up as a rookie and claimed his spot as the long-term starter.

Prior to the 2025 season, the 49ers rewarded Purdy with a five-year, $265 million contract extension. Although he missed several games due to injury, he still had 2,167 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for the 49ers.

Even though San Francisco is 30-15 when Purdy starts, an anonymous NFL general manager claims he's closer to being a backup than he is a top-10 quarterback.

"You know he’s never been a franchise quarterback for me," a longtime GM told Jason La Canfora. "On pure ability, he’s closer to a back-up than a top-10 guy."

Purdy continues to get overlooked.

Since taking over in 2022, Purdy has completed 67.9% of his passes for 11,685 yards with 84 touchdowns and 37 interceptions.

While people will continue to knock Purdy's height, what they can't criticize is his efficiency. During the 2026 season, Purdy led all quarterbacks in expected points added (EPA) per play on late downs. He cleared Jordan Love, Drake Maye and a handful of top-level quarterbacks.

Unfortunately for Purdy, his consistency hasn't silenced the loudest trolls online. He may need to win a Super Bowl to do that.
