J.J. Watt’s NFL career ranks among the most dominant in recent memory. The former Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals defensive end retired as one of the greatest defenders in league history, earning three NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards, five First-Team All-Pro selections and five Pro Bowl nods.
Known for his unmatched power and work ethic, Watt finished his career with 114.5 sacks and a reputation as one of the most respected players ever to play the game. Since announcing his retirement in 2022, Watt has remained active and visible. He joined CBS Sports as an NFL analyst and became involved in numerous charitable initiatives.
Alongside his wife Kealia, a former U.S. women’s soccer player, Watt has also invested in Premier League side Burnley FC. The couple quickly became fan favorites in Burnley, often visiting the city and engaging with supporters. Off the field, Watt has expanded his profile as a philanthropist, entrepreneur and global sports investor, transitioning smoothly from his playing days to a second career in business and media.
On Thursday, J.J. Watt officially confirmed that he and his ownership group have purchased a stake in Spanish club RCD Espanyol. The move had been rumored for months but was made official this week when Espanyol announced a takeover deal with Velocity Sports Limited — the same group that owns Burnley FC.

Watt is part of that ownership consortium, led by ALK Capital chairman Alan Pace. According to ESPN, the deal makes Velocity Sports Limited the majority shareholder of Espanyol, while former owner Rastar Group will remain involved in the club’s operations.
Espanyol, based in Barcelona, shares one of Spain’s fiercest rivalries with one of soccer’s most popular clubs FC Barcelona, making Watt’s entry into the La Liga landscape a significant development. While Burnley and Espanyol will operate independently, the partnership is expected to foster collaboration across scouting, analytics and youth development.
For Watt, this marks another milestone in his expanding post-NFL portfolio. Already a part of the entertainment group Dude Perfect’s investment circle, Watt continues to solidify his global sports influence. His involvement with Espanyol enhances his international presence, and he joins a growing list of American athletes who have invested in European soccer teams, including LeBron James and Tom Brady.
