Many analysts expected the Chicago Bears to select multiple defensive players in the 2026 NFL Draft. They owned seven picks but only added former Georgia Tech defensive tackle Jordan van den Berg at No. 213 in the sixth round.
The 24-year-old played for the Yellow Jackets in the last two seasons. He also previously suited up for Iowa Western and Penn State. Van den Berg shone in 13 games in 2025, recording 44 combined tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks, which led to a first-team All-ACC selection.
Ben Johnson and his staff expect him to play a key role and to produce sacks and quarterback pressures. The Bears struggled with their pass rush last season, but bolstered the unit by signing van den Berg and making free-agent additions.
NFL Network analyst Brian Baldinger posted a video on his Instagram account on Thursday. The former NFL guard discussed van den Berg’s technique in completing tackles and praised the rookie.
Baldinger highlighted the defensive tackle’s strong base and how he uses it to his advantage to get past blocks. Van den Berg also beats guards with his quick first step and ability to dive for tackles.

The 6-foot-3, 310-pound pass rusher has a chance to prove that he is one of the biggest steals in his draft class. He is arguably with the best team that could maximize his potential.
Learning from the Bears’ veteran defensive ends, such as Montez Sweat and Dayo Odeyingbo, will help accelerate van den Berg’s development. While Chicago had a relatively quiet offseason, the front office made calculated moves to add more talent to the roster. It may have hit the jackpot with the underrated van den Berg selection.
