Packers promising rookie is dealing with a familiar issue again

The Green Bay Packers expected an immediate impact from first-round rookie Jordan Morgan. The plan included a first year as a right guard, with a future possibility to play at left tackle — a scenario that ultimately motivated the Packers to draft him so early.

But Morgan’s first season in the NFL has been full of hurdles. This week, an old issue resurfaced to make it even more challenging. Morgan aggravated a shoulder injury from earlier in the year, which forced him to miss practice on Friday. He’s been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears.

“Again, unfortunate,” head coach Matt LaFleur said. “We’re going through that process right now of what’s next.”

Jordan Morgan missed the preseason and three regular season games because of a shoulder injury — it had appeared in two different times. It seems like the third has just happened. After his first NFL start, against the Detroit Lions two weeks ago, Morgan seemed fine and wasn’t even listed on the injury report on Wednesday coming off the bye week.

However, he popped up on the report being limited at practice on Thursday, and he did not practice on Friday because of a shoulder injury.

Injury report

Beyond Morgan, the big concerns are in the secondary. Cornerback Jaire Alexander (knee) and safety Evan Williams (hamstring), who missed the Lions game, are both questionable to play. However, they practiced all week on a limited basis, and head coach Matt LaFleur had indicated they are optimistic about them. Defensive tackle Colby Wooden (shoulder) missed the entire week of practice and is officially listed as doubtful to play — a Packers player with this designation hasn’t been active since 2021.

Besides that, Jordan Morgan is the only offensive line concern. Center Josh Myers, who missed the Lions game with a wrist injury, was limited but practiced the entire week and is off the injury report.

Rasheed Walker appeared on the injury report again on Thursday with a knee injury, but he practiced all week and will be good to go as well. Eglton Jenkins was listed, but it was only a veteran rest, so there’s no issues for him either.

The starting offensive line will have Rasheed Walker, Elgton Jenkins, Josh Myers, Sean Rhyan, and Zach Tom.

Rookie running back MarShawn Lloyd returned to practice and had his 21-day window opened on Wednesday, but he didn’t practice on Friday because he had appendicitis. Because of that, he’s ruled out. It’s unclear at this point what the Packers are going to do to have him later this season.

According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, Green Bay is trying to create an exemption to keep him on IR for more time. Otherwise, the option would be to activate him to the 53-man roster and place him on the NFI-list, forcing him to miss at least four more games.

Defensive tackle Kenny Clark (toe), running back Josh Jacobs (quadricep), defensive end Kingsley Enagbare (elbow), and quarterback Jordan Love (groin) are all off the injury report and good to go.

Other side

For the Chicago Bears, the big problem is that left guard Teven Jenkins has been ruled out with an ankle injury. Backup tackle Kiran Amegadije (calf) is also out. Edge rusher Montez Sweat is questionable with an ankle injury as well.

However, besides Jenkins the starting offensive line will be good to go. It'll be a group with Braxton Jones at left tackle, Ryan Bates moving from left to right guard, Coleman Shelton at center, versatile backup Matt Pryor as the right guard, and Darnell Wright at right tackle.

This season, Pryor has played one snap at LT, 49 at LG, 373 at RG, 59 at RT, and one as a sixth offensive lineman.
