Patrick Mahomes Has Big Plan With Travis Kelce, Chiefs This Season

Two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes still feels the pain of losing Super Bowl LIX to the Philadelphia Eagles last season. In the recent episode of the Kansas City Chiefs' "The Kingdom" documentary, he said that getting to the big dance and losing "does suck and still sucks."

Despite that, the Chiefs quarterback appears more confident than ever about the team and what they can accomplish this 2025 season.

Mahomes made that abundantly clear during the Chiefs' kickoff luncheon on Thursda y, during which he talked about the capabilities of the team and what he plans to do with Travis Kelce and the rest of his teammates.

Patrick Mahomes Has Big Plan for the Chiefs

The Chiefs finished the 2024 campaign with a 15-2 record, but that didn't matter come the postseason when they fell to the 14-3 Eagles in the final game.

Philly beat Kansas City 40-22, with Mahomes and company failing to score in the first half while Jalen Hurts and the Eagles built a 24-point advantage.

Now, for the 2025 season, Mahomes plans to be extra aggressive with the Chiefs by delivering more big plays on offense — plays that gain a significant amount of yardage. In fact, he even mentioned Kelce and his intention of throwing "a lot of deep passes" to the veteran tight end.

"We wanna still be surgical and we wanna still be great on third down in the red zone, stuff like that," Mahomes stated. "But we wanna br ing the big play back and we think we got the guys to do it."

The Chiefs QB added, "And so it's my job to give these guys chances to go out there and make big plays. So a lot of deep passes to Travis and let him go out there and make plays."

Chiefs Will Be Lethal and Exciting to Watch With More Big Plays

It will certainly be interesting to see a more aggressive Chiefs team in 2025, particularly how it changes their offense.

Here's a look at how the Chiefs' offense ranked on big plays in 2024:

  • Rushing: 24th in 20+ yards (7); Tied for 32nd in 40+ yards (0)
  • Passing: 27th in 20+ yards (42); Tied for 31st in 40+ yards (4)
  • Patrick Mahomes: Tied for 19th in 20+ yards among QBs (40); Tied for 22nd in 40+ yards (4)

For what it's worth, the Eagles were one of the better teams in big plays in 2024, with the reigning Super Bowl champions registering 12 40+ passing yards. They were particularly dominant in the rushing game with 25 20+ yards (second in the NFL) and seven 40+ yards (first in the NFL).

If the Chiefs are able to complete more big plays this 2025, they could potentially be a whole lot more dangerous than they were in 2024.
