The New England Patriots want to get their young cornerback paid and on the field.
Christian Gonzalez, however, is being a bit of a tough bargain in his contract negotiations.
The young cornerback wants to reset the market after Seattle Seahawks cornerback Devon Witherspoon got $32 million per year, and he might be asking for specific guarantees or language that could be holding up negotiations.
However, executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf reaffirmed to the fans that he'll continue to push to get a deal done soon.
“Each side is trying to do what’s best for them,” Wolf said, per Boston.com’s Kaley Brown. “...We’re going to continue working with his representation to try to get something done.”
To add insult to injury, Gonzalez has been out while nursing an injury, missing the first two preseason games and joint practices with the Philadelphia Eagles.
He was spotted limping, and head coach Mike Vrabel reassured that he wasn't holding out; he's really hurt.
Gonzalez is still under contract for another season, with the Patriots also holding the right to pick up his fifth-year option.
As such, they can still play the long game and not give him a record-setting extension this offseason if he doesn't agree to their terms.
That said, that would also likely put their relationship at risk, and that's the last thing any organization would want to do with such a promising player who has already established himself among the elite.
