Pats Facing Week 1 Deadline To Extend Christian Gonzalez?

The Seahawks made Devon Witherspoon the NFL’s highest-paid corner on a four-year, $132MM pact in mid-August, potentially providing a blueprint for a Gonzalez deal. Agent Reggie Johnson represents both Gonzalez and Witherspoon, but his talks with the Seahawks went much smoother than his negotiations with the Patriots have. It turns out “structure and total dollars” remain significant issues in Gonzalez’s case, according to Mike Giardi of Boston Sports Journal.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft stated before the Witherspoon extension that the Pats had an offer out to make Gonzalez the top-paid corner in the league. Executive vice president Eliot Wolf made the same claim last week, though Adam Schefter of ESPN pushed back on that, saying New England’s offers have fallen short of what Seattle gave Witherspoon. The fact that Patriots bigwigs have stated otherwise in public “continue(s) to rankle the player’s side,” Giardi relays. 

Witherspoon, a three-time Pro Bowler and one-time second-team All-Pro, ranks first at his position in contract value, average annual salary ($33MM), total guarantees ($101MM-plus) and full guarantees ($59MM-plus). Gonzalez, a one-time Pro Bowler and second-team All-Pro, reportedly wants to surpass Witherspoon by a notable amount.

If Gonzalez does achieve his goal of surpassing Witherspoon, it would make him the highest-paid player in Patriots history. That honor currently belongs to teammate/defensive tackle Milton Williams, who signed a four-year, $104MM contract in free agency in March 2025. However, Fowler writes that Gonzalez and the team remain apart on “several elements.”

As a 2023 first-round pick, Gonzalez’s rookie pact came with a fifth-year option. The Patriots made the easy decision to exercise it during the spring, giving them two years of control left over Gonzalez. On paper, that gives them plenty of time to hammer out an agreement with Gonzalez. But the window will close for several months if he is unwilling to negotiate during the season, which will leave the Patriots and Gonzalez to try again in 2027.
