People Unnecessarily Hating on Lamar Jackson Bothers Marlon Humphrey

Marlon Humphrey stays updated on the latest news around the league because he wants to pursue a career in the media after retiring from the NFL. The first step he will take after successfully transitioning to media is to defend the Baltimore Ravens teammate and quarterback, Lamar Jackson.

Despite being a year senior, Humphrey holds Jackson in the highest regard. The former 32nd overall pick established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in football by winning multiple league MVPs and finishing as runner-up for a third time in last season.

However, critics heavily scrutinize the 28-year-old for falling short of the ultimate goal—winning the Super Bowl. The farthest he managed to guide the Ravens was the AFC title game in the 2023 season.

Humphrey feels for Lamar, noticing how his quarterback faces harsher criticism from football analysts and experts than others. While he understands that analysts are expected to be critical at times, Humphrey wishes the scrutiny on Lamar wasn’t so intense compared to the other 31 quarterbacks.

There’s only like one or two that kinda get blamed for XYZ, and I feel like Lamar is always in that category. It is what it is… That’s probably the only thing that bothers me, but I do understand the media has to do their job.

Marlon Humphrey told ESPN’s Kevin Clark

There’s merit to Humphrey’s statement. Despite his pedigree, Jackson can’t seem to shake off the shadow cast by Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs quarterback made it to five Super Bowls, winning three, and nearly secured a fourth last campaign.

Former Fox Sports employee Emmanuel Acho singled out Jackson for failing to win the games that matter the most.

Lamar has to be special in the playoffs. He’s special in the regular season, but when you think about Josh Allen… 25 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in the playoffs, Patrick Mahomes—he goes without needing an introduction or statistics, Lamar gotta be special. He’s yet to be special in the playoffs, but Lamar has to be the difference maker, if the defense lets you down…if the offense lets you down…be the greater acer.

Acho said before being fired by the network

2025 could be a pivotal year for the Ravens. There are rumors that the Ravens hierarchy is planning to make Lamar Jackson the highest-paid quarterback in the league by paying him $10 million more (a year) than the Cowboys QB Dak Prescott.

Humphrey is also eligible for an extension in 2026. His last big paycheck came in 2020 when he signed a five-year deal.

Marlon Humphrey faces disappointment in the latest ESPN cornerback poll

Humphrey is a 2x All-Pro and has been to four Pro Bowls, including 2024. Last season, he recorded 67 combined tackles (9th most), 15 pass deflections, 6 interceptions (3rd most), and 2 forced fumbles. However, those numbers weren’t enough to be crowned a top 10 cornerback in the latest edition of Jeremy Fowler’s list.

The veteran ESPN analyst compiled the list by gathering data from NFL coaches and executives. Humphrey could only manage a second honorary mention on the list.
