Following the Buccaneers’ joint practice with the Steelers, Head Coach Todd Bowles announced that most starters will play in Saturday’s preseason game, with Mike Evans and Lavonte David being the exceptions.

Evans, who had a notable practice, is expected to be shut down for the remainder of the preseason to avoid any potential risks, while Teddy Bridgewater is set to make an appearance at quarterback. This gives Bridgewater a chance to showcase his skills and potentially solidify his role as a veteran backup to Baker Mayfield.

According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, Todd Bowles decided to keep Baker Mayfield out of Saturday’s preseason game against the Steelers.

Via Stroud,

“After reviewing the tape of today’s practice, Todd Bowles just told me he believes Baker Mayfield played so well today in the joint workout with the Steelers he will NOT play in Saturday night’s game.”

Mayfield had a standout performance in Thursday’s practice, showcasing his passing skills, especially when connecting with Mike Evans. Mayfield’s success in practice aligns with his previous performances, where he’s excelled in critical situations, such as third and fourth downs, ranking fifth in the NFL in EPA per attempt last season.

Mayfield was a scratch for the Buccaneers’ preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans last week, and didn’t see any playing time. However, he’s set to take the field against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Saturday’s preseason game, where he’ll likely face a tough test against the Steelers’ defense. Meanwhile, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who didn’t play against the Titans, is expected to see action against the Steelers.

With Mayfield not playing, the Buccaneers’ quarterback options for Saturday’s preseason game are as follows.

  • Kyle Trask: Expected to take the reins in Mayfield’s absence
  • Teddy Bridgewater: Likely to see significant playing time, potentially starting against the Steelers
  • Connor Bazelak: Also available to play, providing depth to the quarterback position
