The Henry Ruggs saga of the Las Vegas Raiders does not seem to have ended quite yet.
If Ruggs is paroled from a Nevada state prison at the earliest time of August 2026, he has already made his intentions of returning to the NFL known. Reports have already come out saying that Ruggs has been working out during his time in prison, and NFL teams will at least be interested in the former Alabama speedster when he is released. At a recent Hopes for Prisoners event in Nevada, Ruggs gained a temporary special release to speak, where he also said that he would be interested in returning to the Raiders to finish his tenure there on his terms.
The question the Raiders have to face then is whether they should give Ruggs the opportunity to earn his redemption.
Before Ruggs was released due to the fatal crash he caused in 2021, he was on his way to becoming a key piece to the Raiders’ passing attack.
Ruggs had already improved upon his yardage mark from his rookie season, and it appeared as though his ball security issues had been cleaned up. He was gaining trust on offense, and the Raiders still need that speed element on their current receiving corps, despite adding burner Dont’e Thornton Jr. in April’s draft. Ruggs will also be 27 for next season if he ends up playing, so he would still be in his physical prime.
However, one has to imagine the controversy surround a reunion of Ruggs and the Raiders.
Bringing Ruggs back into the fold is sure to kickstart a media firestorm, both from sports and national news outlets. With the Pete Carroll era designed to push the Raiders back into contention as soon as possible, bringing back a notable distraction is not a good way to get going in the right direction.
If Ruggs does get released in a year’s time, the Raiders will have a difficult decision in front of them.
