Ravens make major decision on Diego Pavia

Diego Pavia appears to have failed in his quest to make the Baltimore Ravens.

The Ravens waived Pavia days before the start of training camp, the team announced Thursday. Baltimore made the move in order to open up a roster spot for veteran center Ethan Pocic, who they signed earlier in the day.

The former Vanderbilt quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist got the opportunity to audition for the Ravens’ third-string quarterback job during offseason camp. His initial competition was fellow undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano, but the team also added veteran Skylar Thompson, who was the most impressive of the three quarterbacks during minicamp.

Pavia went undrafted despite a stellar final season at Vanderbilt which saw him throw for 3,539 yards and tally 39 total touchdowns. Teams had concerns about his size and age, as well as his off-field conduct. Those concerns still linger, particularly given his lack of size.

Presumably, Pavia will try to catch on in someone else’s camp. He could also try to catch on in the CFL or other organized leagues where he might get a shot.
